Our Seattle precious metals analysts will sit with you one on one and go through the testing process starting with the magnet test. Precious metals are not magnetic and the magnet test is a quick and easy way to eliminate pieces if need be. Clasps or items with springs/wires etcetera are going to require further evaluation. From there we will examine purity stamps and markings on your pieces and sort accordingly by karat marks to suggest what purity your metals may be.

We use two different tests to validate that your gold is in fact gold as well as determining the purity of your items. Our first test is a density test or weight displacement test. Your piece needs to be solid, in a way where air bubbles can not be trapped on the piece when submerged under water. Using the surface weight as well as the submerged weight hanging on a tray in water, the
machine can calculate the density of your items. If we’re unable to do the density exam, we use the acid test. Both tests are non invasive to your items and will be able to give us the knowledge we need to accurately determine the value of your items.

Once we’ve confirmed all your metals and have an evaluation as to what they are, we are ready to weigh. All Seattle Gold scales that are used for measuring items we pay for have been certified by the state and are regularly calibrated to ensure we’re paying you accurately!
